Skiing in the Dolomites

I have skied many different locations and have yet to find one that matches the Dolomites for the interest factor. Here it's like cross country skiing with lifts. You can plan a tour and set off for a days adventure without hitting the same lift or run twice. You will pass through various towns, each with their own character (not mass produced ski resort towns), and travel a variety of superbly maintained runs. (link to an overview ski map of the local area here but note that it only shows a part of the available ski area.)

Lifts

The lift system is modern and efficient with very few surface lifts. Throughout the area there will be a mix of cable cars, gondolas (bubbles), and fast chairs of various configurations. A breakdown of the Val Gardena system is available here but remember this is only the local area and there are direct links to Val di Fassa, Arabba-Marmolada, Alta Badia (Corvara) and Colfosco, all without removing your skis as the resorts link seamlessly. The ticket system is hands free with a credit card sized card in your pocket being automatically read as you enter the lift and the one lift pass covers all areas.

Grooming and Slope Maintenance

The snow grooming fleet here has to be seen to be believed, after closure each night an army of groomers hits the slopes delivering billiard table runs for the next morning. They also have one of the most extensive and modern snow making systems in the world and the low temperatures (especially in January) keep what is there in very good condition. So if mother nature does not deliver you can still be assured of good on piste conditions.

Restaurants

Italians take food seriously and you will be amazed at the number of on slope restaurants here. Almost every lift has a restaurant nearby with meals ranging from snacks to full dining service. A typical local will hit the slopes late, have a few runs then stop for an extended lunch followed by a relaxing rest on a lounge chair lapping up the winter sun!

Conference Skier Mix

We generally have a mix of beginners through to very experienced skiers. Friendships quickly develop in the conference setting and group skis and tours are organised on an informal as needed basis. There is an excellent progressive beginners area that backs onto town to within 150m of the hotel. There are usually quite a few singles so don't feel shy to come along solo. I am happy to give out some contact numbers of past delegates so you can get an unbiased appraisal of the event but, believe me, you will have a ball...
